A brief review of nutritional studies for Penaeus monodon ArchiMer
Liao, I; Liu, F.
In order to develop effective formulated for Penaeus monodon , sufficient information is needed on its nutritional requirements. Unfortunately, research on this area has been very limited. This paper outlines the results of such research. Since data on the nutritional requirements of P. japonicus are relatively well established, some of these data are also reviewed in this paper and are used as a basis for assessing the nutritional requirements of P. monodon . Protein, lipid, carbohydrate, mineral and vitamin requirements are evaluated from the parameters of growth survival and feed efficiency. Studies on the effects of enzymes and the development of microparticulate diet for larvae are also summarized.

Dietary modulation of some digestive enzymes and Metabolic processes in developing marine fish: Applications to diet formulation ArchiMer
Zambonino, Jose-luis; Cahu, Chantal.
During these last 20 years, many studies have focussed on the development of the digestive tract in marine fish larvae. Most of the studies aimed at acquiring knowledge on the optimal form of dietary supply for different nutrients, in order to formulate a compound diet able to totally replace live preys in the fish larvae feeding sequence. Consequently, most of the studies aimed at describing the effect of dietary adaptation on digestive enzymes profile, the morphology of the main organs, while others aspects of the physiology of the larvae digestive tract (gut hormones, intestinal transport...) were poorly investigated. This review reports the more recent data on dietary modulation of digestive enzymes with a particular emphasis, when possible, on the...

Effect of some vitamins and micronutrient deficiencies on the production of higher alcohols by Saccharomyces cerevisiae Scientia Agricola
Gutierrez,L.E..
A study was carried out in order to determine the effect of vitamins (biotin, thiamine, pantotheniic acid and pyridoxal) and micronutrient (zinc, boron, manganese and iron) deficiencies on higher alcohol production during alcoholic fermentation with the industrially used yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae M-300-A. Zinc deficiency induced a reduction on the levels of isobutyl and isoamyl alcohols. An increase on isobutyl alcohol (fivefold) and a reduction of isoamyl alcohol (two fold) and n-propyl alcohol (three fold) contents resulted from pantotheiiic acid deficiency, whereas pyridoxal deficiency caused an increase on the levels of isobutyl and isoamyl alcohols. Biotin was not essential for the growth of this strain.

Ionizing radiation effects on food vitamins: a review BABT
Dionísio,Ana Paula; Gomes,Renata Takassugui; Oetterer,Marília.
Ionizing radiation has been widely used in industrial processes, especially in the sterilization of medicals, pharmaceuticals, cosmetic products, and in food processing. Similar to other techniques of food processing, irradiation can induce certain alterations that can modify both the chemical composition and the nutritional value of foods. These changes depend on the food composition, the irradiation dose and factors such as temperature and presence or absence of oxygen in the irradiating environment. The sensitivity of vitamins to radiation is unpredictable and food vitamin losses during the irradiation are often substantial. The aim of this study was to discuss retention or loss of vitamins in several food products submitted to an irradiation process.

Nutrition, digestion et développement des larves de crevettes et poissons marins ArchiMer
Cahu, Chantal.
This report is presented by Chantal Cahu for obtaining accreditation to supervise research. Since 1981, her research activity has addressed the study of reproducers' nutrition and the young stages of development of marine organisms belonging to two different branch lines, crustaceans and fish. This work, performed in a base-lined research body, IFREMER, is placed within a more general programme of aquaculture development. Indeed, whatever species are at issue, the development of aquaculture in France, as at the global level, is based on the production of juveniles in hatcheries. My work has therefore more precisely the goal of acquiring knowledge about the nutritional needs, mechanisms of digestion and the development of these animals in order to improve...

Miranda,Margarita; Vega-Gálvez,Antonio; Quispe-Fuentes,Issis; Rodríguez,María José; Maureira,Héctor; Martínez,Enrique A.
This study explored the diversity of the quinoa crop in Chile from a nutritional perspective. Nutritional properties, minerals, vitamins, and saponin content were assessed in seeds of six Chilean quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa Willd.) ecotypes grown in three main production areas with distinctive climatic and edaphic conditions: Ancovinto and Cancosa in the North-Altiplano or High Plateau, Cáhuil and Faro in the central coastal area, and Regalona and Villarrica in the south of the country. There were significant differences (P < 0.05) in all the nutritional properties of the quinoa seeds in all three areas. Quinoa of the Villarrica ecotype showed the highest protein content (16.10 g 100 g-1 DM) and the highest content of vitamins E and C (4.644 ± 0.240 and...

Nutritional value of non-conventional vegetables prepared by family farmers in rural communities Ciência Rural
Oliveira,Heliane Aparecida Barros de; Anunciação,Pamella Cristine; Silva,Bárbara Pereira da; Souza,Ângela Maria Natal de; Pinheiro,Soraia Silva; Lucia,Ceres Mattos Della; Cardoso,Leandro de Morais; Castro,Luiza Carla Vidigal; Pinheiro-Sant’Ana,Helena Maria.
ABSTRACT: Four most consumed non-conventional vegetables were analyzed raw and after cooking techniques routinely used by family farmers: ora-pro-nobis (Pereskia aculeata Mill.); wild mustard (Sinapis arvensis L.), serralha (Sonchus arvensis L), and capiçova (Erechtites valeriana). Chemical composition was determined according to AOAC. Vitamin C, vitamin E and carotenoids were determined by high-performance liquid chromatography, and phenolic compounds and minerals by spectrophotometry. Vitamin E and carotenoids concentrations were higher in stir fried wild mustard (7.68 mg.100 g-1 and 7.45 mg.100 g-1, respectively). Cooking reduced some minerals concentration in the non-conventional vegetables, but increased vitamins and carotenoids concentrations. The...

Polymorphism of the BCO2 gene and the content of carotenoids, retinol, and α-tocopherol in the liver and fat of rabbits R. Bras. Zootec.
Strychalski,Janusz; Gugołek,Andrzej; Brym,Paweł; Antoszkiewicz,Zofia; Chwastowska-Siwiecka,Iwona.
ABSTRACT The study was carried out to evaluate the effect of AAT-deletion mutation at codon 248 of the BCO2 gene on the content of lutein, β-carotene, retinol, and α-tocopherol in the liver and fat of crossbred rabbits. The experimental animals comprised 90 rabbits, produced by reciprocal crossing between ins/del heterozygous parents of Flemish Giant, New Zealand Red, and Termond White breeds. All rabbits in the litter were genotyped, given the same diet, and finally slaughtered at 140 d of age. It was found that regardless of the mating scheme employed, all del/del homozygotes had the yellow fat trait, whereas heterozygous and homozygotes animals without the AAT deletion (ins/ins) developed white fat. Lutein concentration in fat was over 13-fold higher in...

Simultaneous determination of a-tocopheryl acetate and tocopherols in aquatic organisms and fish feed OMA
Huo, J.-Z.; Nelis, H.; Lavens, P.; Sorgeloos, P.; De Leenheer, A.P..
In aquaculture, alpha-tocopheryl acetate (alpha-TA) is the main source of vitamin E used to fortify fish feed. Alpha-TA in fish is often determined indirectly, i.e. by alkaline hydrolysis, followed by quantitation of ‘total alpha-tocopherol’ (alpha-T) and substraction of the natively present alpha-T. The aim of this study was to develop an HPLC method for the simultaneous quantitative determination of alpha-TA and free tocopherols in aquatic organisms and fish feed. The assay consists of a simple extraction with methanol containing butylhydroxytoluene (BHT) as an antioxidant, followed by reversed-phase chromatography with consecutive UV and fluorescence detection of alpha-TA and tocopherols, respectively. The peak of the internal standard tocol in the...

Specific nutrient supplementation of defined serum-free medium for the improvement of CHO cells growth and t-PA production Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Altamirano,Claudia; Illanes,Andrés; Canessa,Rossana; Becerra,Silvana.
Recombinant CHO TF70R cells are able to grow and produce t-PA on serum-free medium BIOPRO1 (BioWhitaker Europe, Belgium). The purpose of the present study was to determine the effect of medium supplementation with vitamins, lipids, and specific amino acids on cell growth, t-PA production and biological functionality. Among vitamins, only biotin, folic acid, cobalamine and benzoic acid were required for improving growth and t-PA production. Lipid supplement allowed a significant increase cell concentration and t-PA specific activity and concentration, though its specific production rate decreased slightly. Medium supplementation with proline, serine and asparagine had also positive effects on cell growth. Besides, the addition of asparagine (even in the...

The Economics of Health Behavior and Vitamin Consumption AgEcon
Schroeter, Christiane; Anders, Sven M.; Carlson, Andrea; Rickard, Bradley J..
Conventionally, fruits and vegetables have been the major source of micronutrients. However, with the rising availability of nutritional supplements, U.S. consumers no longer need to rely on food alone for their nutritional needs. Time-pressured consumers with limited cooking skills and nutrition knowledge may find it easier to take vitamin supplements. The objective of this paper is to determine the impact of lifestyle, diet behavior including vitamin supplement consumption, and food culture on diet quality outcomes as measured by the Healthy Eating Index-2005 (HEI) and total energy intake. We use the 2003-04 U.S. National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) to examine the relationship between HEI and caloric intake. Further, our specific...

Cabrera Ordoñez,,Yudy Ana; Estrada Mesa,Eliana María; Cortés Rodríguez,Misael.
Abstract Dehydrated products added with active components (AC) represent a healthy alternative for modern consumer. The aim of this research was to evaluate the influence of drying process conditions on the physiological quality attributes of cape gooseberry (Physalis peruviana L.) impregnated under vacuum with AC and dehydrated. A factorial design was performed with two independent variables, 2 levels per variable (temperature: 50 and 60ºC, air velocity: 2.0 and 3.0 m.s-1) and three replicates per drying condition. In fact, cape gooseberry fruits were previously impregnated under vacuum with an emulsion containing calcium and vitamins B9, C, D3 and E, which were subjected to dehydration until a water activity of approximately 0.6. In addition, drying rate...
